qehal’el (qe·HAL·el). The contracted form of qehal ‘elohîm used by the ancient church, which saw itself as the eschatological community of God, to describe itself; literally “assembly of God” from which the English phrase “Church of God” is derived; the formal self-designation, or proper name, for the ancient church.
